The First Amendment

The First Amendment protects American citizens’ right to practice freedom of speech, religion, assembly, and petition. This amendment was adopted in the Bill of Rights in 1791 and was written presumably by James Madison, who is said to have written most of the Bill of Rights and eventually went on to become the fourth president of the United States. With the First Amendment being common knowledge and being relatively understood by the American people, over the past years, there have been multiple instances where the First Amendment was misunderstood and had to be redefined and or readdressed for clarification.

The right to “petition the Government for redress of grievances” is among the oldest in our legal heritage, dating back 800 years to the Magna Carta, and receiving explicit protection in the English Bill of Rights of 1689, long before the American Revolution. In protest of the government, this right goes hand in hand with the right to criticize, as well as the other rights. American citizens have the right to send a formal request to or for a specific cause. As stated earlier, this has been a right since before America’s creation. It has now become a staple in American democracy and American citizens utilize its power on a daily basis. Especially nowadays with the amount of civil disruption going on in America.

The First Amendment is certainly one of the most powerful amendments in America. This amendment gives Americans the right to practice freedom of speech, religion, assembly, and petition and the power the right gives Americans is being utilized every day. The power is within the people. People have the power to make change and that change comes in the form of rights. Rights that allow everyone to come to an understanding and make moves to create a true democracy in the Land of the Free.
